Learning a new instrument is a great way to build confidence, learn a new skill, and — most importantly — have fun!

And as a lifelong lover of music, I understand how thrilling it can be to play your favorite song on the guitar, create your first composition, and master a challenging passage.

I have a B.A. in music and psychology from Kalamazoo College and an Ed.M. in music education from Teachers College, Columbia University and have been teaching private students for six years.

My students learn how to play songs they love, tune their instruments, and improvise and express themselves creatively. We’ll cover how to listen to music, too, so you can hear nuances, chord changes, and more. You’ll understand how music works and how your favorite songs are built so you can compose your own music, too.

Whether you take music lessons online, through Skype or Google Hangouts, or in-person at my San Diego, CA studio, we’ll be sure to have a great time together.

What do my music students think?

Justine actually knows HOW to teach, in such a way as to create lasting learning and give me the tools to learn more on my own... It makes so much more sense when you have a full picture of what's going on. I even hear music differently now. Thanks Justine!

She is professional, patient and always on time. I was very hesitant about skype lessons but it has been great.

Amazingly Patient

Justine is amazingly patient and great at breaking down the process for beginners. I like that she teaches using an app on her iPad - which I can use as a practice tool at home.

Domestic & International Online Music Lessons

I’m excited about the opportunity to play music with you! I’m able to work with international bass guitar, upright bass, guitar, and music theory students through Skype or Google Hangouts and PayPal. Please note that I am located in Pacific Standard Time (PST – GMT-8) and that a high-speed internet connection is needed in order to make sure that we can see and hear each other appropriately.

Online lessons can be just as effective as in-person lessons for teaching you the basics of your instrument, developing technique, and achieving your musical goals! I’ll use screen sharing to display music, chords, and scale charts during the lessons. Of course, all materials will be emailed to you, too. And communication is extra important when it comes to online lessons; because I can’t make physical adjustments, I’ll often assess how you hold your musical instrument and describe how you can make the adjustments yourself.
